Immersed Games
We are creating a multiplayer online virtual world in which students develop their unique characters, playing their way into learning educational content and skills.
We want to use the addictive power of video games for a positive outcome, in an environment which encourages learning and prosocial behaviors. Learning in a video game, rather than having limited student choice with low motivation in traditional education, allows students to have empowerment over what they learn and do, content is embedded in context, and they are motivated to build their character. In addition to educational content, our game will include social elements: children create custom characters, have their own apartment to decorate, play arcade/social games, and explore the environment.
The power of adaptive learning can also be used to provide additional supports to students right when needed. There will be a strong data backend where teachers and parents can see what students are learning, areas they might be struggling with, and even provide ideas for fun activities to do in real life to support their learning.
Right now, we are working on our social base and the first educational content - sixth grade science. Our artist (and some interns) are developing the rooms and furniture options and beginning to build the base of the city, including a library which will have open-access materials for students, and we are beginning to write the content for our first educational quest lines.
