Remember One Spark 2013

Art • Entry #823

I’ve always had a knack for writing. English was my favorite subject and I once started to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing. But I soon found myself wandering down a different path in my life. In July 2009 I was given the chance to be a “Roadie for a Day” for a nationally-known band. Now, almost four years later, I run merchandise for a well-known local band and have begun to try and make a name for myself as a music journalist. I write album and show reviews and attempt to interview every artist that rolls through town. However, travelling with a band continues to be one of my biggest aspirations. Opportunities to do so have arisen in the past couple years and even though they fell through, they all provoked the same troubling question: how would I survive? The term “starving artist” immediately came to mind and I realized that without the financial support of a distinguished magazine, it’d be nearly impossible to make my dream a reality. The music industry isn’t what it used to be; nowadays musicians barely make enough to make ends meet. I want to live on the road and document all of my experiences. I want to bring everything that happens behind the scenes to the forefront. But to do that, I need your help. Where photographers have pictures, I have words and those words, my words, deserve to be written and read.
